This is a long awaited post where I realized a few days back that I have not written reviews on my favorite Japanese restaurant to date. Therefore, this post is to pay a tribute to my beloved Ton Chan Japanese restaurant which I had l had "love at first sight" almost 3 years back. Here was the story:
I was doing my diploma internship back in January 2012 at Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur and I was introduced to this authentic Japanese restaurant. I was not directly exposed to authentic Japanese food as my parents are not a fan of it. Thus, being a foodie myself, I made him brought me to try it out as I wanted to know how good it was. After trying out their food, I can say that it was the tastiest Japanese food I have ever tasted and I was their regular customer since then (it is a must for me to dine there once a month at least). This restaurant has more than 11 years of history and it is still one of the top choices for Japanese businessmen to dine during lunch time.
The restaurant is tuck away from busy and noisy shopping areas, located just at the 1st floor of Wisma Cosway. As stated in the name of the restaurant, "Ton" means pork, therefore, it is a non-halal restaurant. Ton Chan restaurant is specialized in ramen. However, they do not serve sushi and chawanmushi at the restaurant. I made a trip back there recently and it brought back a lot of memories.
Cozy and warm atmosphere of the restaurant that makes customers feel like home.
Agedeshi Tofu RM9.00
The Agedeshi Tofu is one of the best in town. It is a must-try item.
Salmon Sashimi RM18.00
It is a very generous serving of 7 pieces of salmon at this price. The salmon served at Ton Chan is one of the best I have eaten so far with this reasonable price. It is a must-try item.
Gomoku Ramen RM18.00
This bowl of ramen comes with a piece of cha siu, vegetable and a piece of tempura prawn. The Gomoku ramen soup base has a lighter pork bone taste which may be too subtle for those of you who love "kao kao" (strong) flavor.
Tonkotsu Ramen RM14.00 (p.s. my favorite ramen)
Tonkotsu ramen uses a pork bone base soup. The soup base has more powerful flavor in it compared to the previous Gomoku ramen. Thus, if you like a stronger flavor in your soup, you could give this a try. It is highly recommended.
Ton Chan also offers a range of Japanese comic books for customers' reading while waiting for your food to arrive.
There are also Japanese newspapers for the businessmen as well.
The restaurant is located at Wisma Cosway, which is just 5 minutes away from Pavilion using the KLCC-Pavilion pedestrian bridge.
Their reasonable price + good food = a must try
Comments: The presentation for the Gomoku ramen could have been done better by placing the vegetables all on one side to be more presentable and appetizing. The tempura prawn was not the usual light brown color, however it was cooked to perfection.To my slight disappointment, the tamago of both ramen was a little overcooked. However, the presentation of the Tonkotsu Ramen was very well done. This is still the best place for you guys (salmon sashimi lover) to have your favorite salmon sashimi as it is very fresh compared to many other Japanese restaurants, including Sakae Sushi, Sushi Zanmai, Sushi King and sometimes Sushi Tei. Moreover, Japanese ramen restaurants nowadays price their menu items pretty pricey, most ramen are priced above RM20.00, therefore, Ton Chan restaurant is still the most affordable and value-for-money Japanese restaurant that I have came across.
